Subject: invitation to contribute to Biography’s «year’s work» initiative
To: idurangi@filol.ucm.es
Aloha Isabel:
I hope all is well with you. I’m writing to ask your advice about the new
feature of *Biography* I mentioned to you in Madeira last summer.
As the description below explains in detail, we’re launching an annual
«year’s work» section, for which scholars will write short essays (no more
than 2,400 words) reflecting on *important publications in life writing in
their regions/languages during the past year. Essays for the first series
will be due by October 1, 2016.*
I’m wondering if you’d have suggestions for people who might write such an
essay for Spain. Of course, if you’re interested in writing the essay
yourself, that would be terrific.
Thanks very much.
John
*Here’s the complete description: *
With our Fall 2017 issue, the *Biography* will be launching an annual
feature: a collection of short essays covering influential publications in
biography, autobiography, memoir, and other forms of life writing in
different nations and regions during the previous year.
These reports will replace the “Reviewed Elsewhere” feature of our past
volumes and will complement our ongoing “Annual Bibliography of Works About
Life Writing.” Our aim is to offer focused, site-specific perspectives on
current trends in auto/biography around the world. We are soliciting essays
from experts on life writing in particular geographical and linguistic
domains. To make these resources optimally accessible to the scholars for
whom they are most relevant, we are encouraging contributors to write their
essays in the language of their choice. In this first year we expect to
include viewpoints from across the Americas, Europe, and Oceania. Over
time, we will expand the reach of this “year’s work” section to parts of
the world that have been less represented in mainstream life writing
studies.
We would like to invite you to contribute an essay on publications in life
writing for the period spanning from mid-2015 to mid-2016 in your region.
We are looking for an essay of no more than 2,400 words reflecting on
whatever publications, issues, and events related to auto/biographical
cultural production in your region seem most relevant to you. Your report
should focus principally on important works of life writing that have
appeared during the year (biographies, memoirs, and so on) rather than on
scholarly treatments of life writing texts, but if a work of scholarship
has made an especially significant impact, it should certainly be included.
Your essay need not provide a comprehensive survey of life writing
publications in your region; its coherence should come from the particular
viewpoint you want to offer.
If you elect to write in a language other than English, we will ask you to
provide a very brief (one paragraph) synopsis in English of your main
points, including the titles of the most important texts.
We would need to receive your essay, attached as a Microsoft Word file to
biograph@hawaii.edu, by October 1, 2016.
We are looking forward to seeing how this initiative develops, and we thank
you for considering our invitation to take part in it.
